SOLO: Immersive light and sonic installation using Hydroelectric Active Polymers
SOLO, with Karmen Franinovic, explores artificial sentience and pain perception through electroactive polymers, electricity in fluids, and acoustic feedback—spatial sound and a reactive lens amplifying light in an encompassing space.
SOLO, a collaboration between ourselves and Karmen Franinovic, explores the intricate facets of Artificial Sentience, particularly focusing on the perception of pain. Drawing inspiration from Neuronal Activity, our exploration uses electroactive polymers to probe the boundaries of electricity when interacting with fluids. Acoustic feedback loops come into play as pivotal tools, fostering both self-awareness and environmental recognition.
This project, showcased at the Laocoon Festival, combines diverse fields and technologies such as Electroactive Polymers, Machine Listening, Spatial Sound, Robotics, Light Design, and Wet Electronics. Technologies harnessed include C#, Supercollider, Arduino, and more. The culmination is a compelling environment: spatialized sonic impulses juxtaposed with a retractable 'alive-lens', emitting amplified light, emphasizing the nuance and intricacies of a truly reactive being.
